Frequently Asked Questions

What is meant by “our industry?"

Our industry consists of non-utility companies that provide end-use energy efficiency products and/or services throughout California's non-transportation market sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural and/or public sectors.

What is the relationship of the Efficiency Council to other advocacy groups addressing efficiency issues in California?

The Efficiency Council is one of the primary voices of energy efficiency businesses in California.  Our success depends, in part, on our ability to work with other groups when our interests coincide. We actively work with these other groups and support their positions as appropriate, and will also seek their input and support of our own positions.

What are the positions that the Efficiency Council will take?

The fundamental positions of the Efficiency Council are defined by its mission statement as interpreted by its board and Full Members.

How does the Efficiency Council decide what positions to take?

The Board of Directors, elected by Full Members, is the final decider of what positions the organization takes in any forum. To work as an effective industry group, the Efficiency Council takes positions that have support from a large majority of members; however, the positions taken are those of the organization and not necessarily those of individual members. Members may state their own positions in the same forums.

How can my company join the Efficiency Council?

Full Members of the Efficiency Council are non-utility energy efficiency businesses, including non-profits, that provide efficiency products and services in California.  Associate Members have an interest in the state's energy efficiency industry but do not directly provide energy efficiency products or services.  Companies can apply to be Full Members or Associate Members through our Join Us page.

Does My Business or Organization Qualify as a Full or Associate Member?

Full Members directly provide energy efficiency products or services in California. Typical Full Members may include energy service companies, engineering and architecture firms, contractors, implementation and evaluation consultants, manufacturers, and distributors of energy efficiency products and equipment.

Associate Members are businesses and organizations that do not have an identifiable unit or area of business that directly provides energy efficiency services and products. Associate Members can be financial institutions, legal service providers, non-profit groups, and local governments, among others, with an interest in California’s energy efficiency industry. Associate Membership is not open to individuals, nor is it an option for businesses that are eligible for Full Membership in the Council.

If there is any uncertainty as to whether a business or organization would be classified as a Full or Associate Member, the final determination rests with the Efficiency Council’s Board of Directors.
